Volume 5 Issue 7 SEPTEMBER 2008

Greetings from the Desk of the Commander

September is here which means the hot summer days are behind us and the monsoons are history. It also means that Fall is upon us and it will be a busy place at Post 7. Planning for the Veterans Parade is underway and there is a lot of work to be done before November 11, 2008. If you are interested in helping out, please call me at 323-8438.

I am happy with the increase activity at the Post but I encourage everyone to get involved as a volunteer or just stop by and visit the Dugout Lounge and mingle with your comrades. If you have not seen the remodeled Dugout, you’ll be surprised. Let’s not forget to take care of Mary and Tom our volunteer barkeeps, there are friendly and hardworking and they will take care of you.

I personally want to thank Don Alf and JR Alf for fixing the exhaust fan in our kitchen, kudos to both of you.

Check your calendars for upcoming events. Come out and support the Fish Fry and Steak Sundays, once you try it, you’ll know what you have been missing. We have added additional dinners this fall including Fried Chicken Dinners, Liver and Onions and Italian Night plus many more surprises. Help us out by reserving your dinner by calling the Office or the Dugout Lounge at 622-8703.

See you at the membership meeting on the third Thursday of the month, we need you there ! Good time to come out and meet me and new members.

For God and Country,
Abram Lares, Commander

Legion Auxiliary
A decision was made at the August Executive Committee meeting to try having one or two dinners during September, while we try to get more volunteers to re-open the bingo kitchen. In order for this to work, we need cooks, servers, clean-up crew and cashier. The Legion and Sons of American Legion could help us out since we are a "Legion Family" We need to pull together and make this work for our Unit. If interested in helping please call the Post 7 office and leave your name & phone number with Helen at 622-8703.
The Unit will be putting on a Hamburger Fry on Friday, September 26th serving from 5 to 7pm. Menu will consist of a large hamburger with condiments, chips and dessert for $5. Since this will be our first attempt we would like to have an idea of how many will be attending, therefore we are asking for your response by calling 622-8703 or leaving your name and how many will be attending with the bartender by Wednesday, Sept.24th.
I hope our members enjoyed the summer months off from regular meetings and are ready to start a new year with excitement and working together with the Legion, Sons of the American Legion and our newest addition to our Legion Family, the Post 7 Legion Riders. Unit 7 will meet Thursday, September 11th at Post 7 with the Executive Committee meeting at 6pm and the regular meeting at 7pm.
The So. Az. VA Health Care System and Davis-Monthan AFB will pay tribute to all former American Poisoners of War and those Missing in Action. Everyone is invited to join them to recognize and honor those who gave so much. When: September 19, 2008, 10:00 A.M., in the auditorium at the VAMC for the annual POW-M IA Recognition Day.
Don't forget the first District 2 meeting is September 21st and the Auxiliary will meet at Post 109, 2 pm in Corona de Tucson . The American Legion is meeting at the VFW in Nogales.
Before going into the part of my article, I need to thank Helen Stout, Girls State Chairman and Chuck Hudson, Boys State Chairman for an outstanding program on August 3rd and for the great turnout. When listening to the youth speak I got the impression they did learn how our government works, had fun and made lasting friendships. They grew in knowledge and survived a week without parents plus being away from home which was a big adjustment for most of them.
I also want to thank Kathy Morales, Della Hudson for their donation of school supplies to help fill the "Hero Back Packs" and to Mary Manges for the stuffed toys. The Packs and contents were given to children in honor of a parent who is currently deployed on military duty and away from the family. Della and Chuck Hudson took these to Family Support Services at D-M AFB. Thank You!
WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST Auxiliary members Barbara Whitney and Patricia Susanna.
(check the Sept. Calendar for all events)
Until next time, Kimberly A. Wynn, President

From Squadron 7
Hello again. The summer is nearly over, even though you can’t tell from the temperatures. Soon our “blackout” will be over and we can resume our usual activities. And we have a few coming up that everyone needs to know about and I hope you will support them all.

I hope all of you can make it to our Labor Day “Free for All” starting at 3:00 on September 1. We will be providing the grill and the cooks, you just need to bring your own steak, hamburger, whatever. We’ll do the cooking for you. We’re also planning to have some side dishes as well. This is our first try at this, and I hope you all come down to enjoy yourselves.

We also have the steak fry back on the second Sunday of every month, starting on September 14 at 3:00 p.m. Come out and have a delicious meal and share the camaraderie of your fellow members.

And finally, our 1st Annual Bike Show benefitting the Post 7 building fund is coming up on September 28. Big thanks go out to Mary Manges, Lou Scheer, as well as the Post Commander and Unit President for all of their hard work in putting the show together. They have all put in countless hours trying to make this a success for our Post. Please try to make it to this one. This should be quite an event and I think everyone who attends will have a great time.

So, until next month…

For God and Country
Joe Roberts, Commander

AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL NEWS

Congratulations to the Post 7 Badgers baseball team. They went thru the State Tournament with flying colors going undefeated and then participated in the regional at Surprise, AZ. They lost out to the team from Navada who will now go on to the National Tournament.

ARIZONA GIRLS STATE - BOYS STATE PROGRAM

Five delegates to the 2008 Boys State session from local schools and three delegates to Girls State made time to come to the Post and give a short talk to members of Post 7, Auxiliary Unit 7 and SAL Squadron 7 last month showing their appreciation for the funds raised to make it possible for them to attend these outstanding youth programs.
Thanks are extended from Chrm. Chuck Hudson & Helen Stout to all those attending and making the program possible.
From the Auxiliary BINGO Kitchen:
I never dreamed one day the Auxiliary Bingo Kitchen would close . This was our only means of raising funds for the programs of the American Legion Auxiliary but reality has hit us hard-we were down to just 3 workers and those same people can't work every Saturday nor could 1 member work by herself. It takes 2 in the kitchen and a cashier. If we get more members to volunteer for the bingo kitchen, then YES we will re-open. If you can help 4 hrs. on a Saturday, please call 622-8703 and leave your name & phone number with Helen Stout. Please help your Unit by volunteering your time in order for this Unit to continue the tradition of helping the veterans and children of our community.

National Security
Russia and China are attempting to attain world power leadership. The current gambit by Russia is the self-instigated invasion of U. S. ally Republic of Georgia. Bombings and incursion by ground forces have been rejected by President Bush calling for immediate withdrawal and the U. S. military providing food and water support to devastated Georgians. Russians resent Georgian sovereignty and the power play timed for the Olympics posed the US how it could support an ally. Diplomatically, it is a ver serious problem with possible confrontation with US military humanitarian aid and Russian military forces in Georgia.
China has spent billions on promoting the International Olympics and made great effort to develop competitors for Olympic medals. It boils down to a competition with the United States in the world view. Problems such as the recent earthquake, human rights in Tibet, river algae pollution, smog in Beijing and the lack of Chinese attendance at the events hamper this goal.
Our national security and quality of life is endangered by failure to attain energy independence. It is imperative that we provide petroleum by drilling and building refineries as well as providing nuclear power development. We have adequate resources in Alaska, the continental US and off-shore. We buy major amounts from Middle East sources and the money goes to support hostile entities. It is well to conserve but specious substitutions of ethanol, solar and wind power and hybrids are in the distant future. Oil is now. Airplanes do not fly on solar power.

Sam H. Sharp, Chairman
Legislative
As I have repeatedly and earlier stated the problem of our economy is found in the national legislature. Congress has failed to act, or diverted attention from our ability to reduce gas prices.
During a more typical legislative year, the House by this time of the year would be well on its way toward completing floor passage of most annual spending measures. The Senate would be close behind with some committee action on various measures. However, this is not a normal year. Congressional leaders appear intent on saving most fiscal 2009 spending bills for the next administration.
The House’’s Defense $487.7 billion bill appropriation is $4 billion short of the President's request. Defense Subcommittee Chairman Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., said the appropriations process was "dead" for the year given GOP appropriators' attempts to bring up unrelated drilling amendments.
The November election will be critical in affecting the course of America. It is incumbent for citizens to exercise intelligence, reason/logic and historical memory in deliberating who to support. The facts are not often related by a biased media.
